The reason they are illegal is because the United States Golf Association (USGA) have a rule that say if the head of your driver is acting like a spring to give the ball an extra boost, then its illegal. In 2004 the USGA also set a size limit on the drivers face to 460 cubic centimeters. This is about 4 ½ inches wide and 2 ¼ inches high.
